D&D's monster manual is a classic, over the years I've owned several different ones from different editions and I've handled others from when I was just a player during AD&D second edition and the Monster Manual was a modular affair that you kept in dossiers as new monsters came out。 It was a book that really fascinated me as a kid, and I think my first D&D buy was the third edition Monster Manual, which is somewhere in my parents house。Having recently gotten back into the game and having the 20 D&D's monster manual is a classic, over the years I've owned several different ones from different editions and I've handled others from when I was just a player during AD&D second edition and the Monster Manual was a modular affair that you kept in dossiers as new monsters came out。 It was a book that really fascinated me as a kid, and I think my first D&D buy was the third edition Monster Manual, which is somewhere in my parents house。Having recently gotten back into the game and having the 2014, fifth edition, Manual around the house, I decided to read it cover to cover for the first time。 It's still wildly entertaining, even if you aren't interested in D&D it's easy to skip the stat blocks of the monsters and simply lose yourself in the images and lore descriptions。 It's a format that has been fascinating since medieval times, when bestiaries were made to introduce people to the strange beings, real or imagined, that populated popular culture at the time。As an utilitarian book it's particularly useful if you are a Dungeon Master trying to populate your own world with beasties and adversaries for your players and then you are going to need to pay attention to your stat blocks and that's all good, but the fascination of the book for me is still in the pure childish wonderment of looking at pictures of weird monsters and reading about them。 。。。more

It's the Monster Manual for 5e D&D。 Lots of useful stats for DMs along with some seriously creepy illustrations。 Not exactly bedtime-story material! For a game rule book, this one kept my interest!

I'm so happy I no longer have to painstakingly copy down all the monster stats into my notebook and can instead just take note of the page! Also, really cool art and I love all the lore, even though it's not necessarily relevant to someone playing in the Critical Role universe。 I'm so happy I no longer have to painstakingly copy down all the monster stats into my notebook and can instead just take note of the page! Compared to the 1E manual--the one I bought back in the 80s, and still own!--this has a lot more lore, which I do like。 It also has a mix of a lot of old favorites from the Fiend Folio, like the githyanki and revenants。 Some things seem out of balance, and others left me scratching my head。 I plan to exercise my DM's prerogative to tweak things as a I see fit。 Compared to the 1E manual--the one I bought back in the 80s, and still own!--this has a lot more lore, which I do like。 It also has a mix of a lot of old favorites from the Fiend Folio, like the githyanki and revenants。 Some things seem out of balance, and others left me scratching my head。 I plan to exercise my DM's prerogative to tweak things as a I see fit。 。。。more

It's a great reference book and the description of some creatures will engage your imagination and make you want to feature them。 I thought it's a shame that for so many of these we don't get more details - they seem so one-dimensional but I bet you could make them really really interesting。 It's a great reference book and the description of some creatures will engage your imagination and make you want to feature them。 I thought it's a shame that for so many of these we don't get more details - they seem so one-dimensional but I bet you could make them really really interesting。 。。。more

Again, you do not need this book to run a game of DnD, but damn it helps。 The sheer amount of useful information for a dungeon master contained in this book is incredible, and the lore accompanying the various statblocks is extremely good - even just for inspiration, if you're making your own setting。 I do have some issues with some statblocks - the Tarrasque feels really underpowered - but overall, this is a must-have。 Again, you do not need this book to run a game of DnD, but damn it helps。 The sheer amount of useful information for a dungeon master contained in this book is incredible, and the lore accompanying the various statblocks is extremely good - even just for inspiration, if you're making your own setting。 I do have some issues with some statblocks - the Tarrasque feels really underpowered - but overall, this is a must-have。 。。。more

Actually very fun to read although obviously people have legitimate gripes with changing monster names to make them sound less scary and more fantastic or w/e。

Do you love monsters AND encyclopaedia? You wanna play Dungeons and Dragons? When I can recomment this!I like reading stuff about the monsters。 How they are and seeing nice drawings of them。 You got the stats and can use them in your game。 I just like looking at the drawings and reading the information about the monsters :D

Excellent reference, imo not just for gamers/Dungeon Masters but also for fantasy writers and artists。 The book includes a lot of worldbuilding lore in addition to stat blocks, all of which give great plot and quest ideas in addition to well-balanced foes。 The artwork is absolutely amazing, with a picture for every monster and variant。 Fantastic edition。

It's a manual of monsters - does what it says on the tin。 Personally, I'm more narrative-focused than game-focused in my RPGing, so I would have liked to have seen more on ecology, culture, and how to integrate these beasts into the game world or scenario organically and plausibly, whereas the book retains the "what you find in the next 10' x 10' room" flavour that has been a feature since 1st ed。 Still, that's a niggle rather than a deal breaker。 It's a manual of monsters - does what it says on the tin。 Personally, I'm more narrative-focused than game-focused in my RPGing, so I would have liked to have seen more on ecology, culture, and how to integrate these beasts into the game world or scenario organically and plausibly, whereas the book retains the "what you find in the next 10' x 10' room" flavour that has been a feature since 1st ed。 Still, that's a niggle rather than a deal breaker。 。。。more

A huge amount of monsters of all types for you to throw at your players in D&D 5e。 Very good book for DM's, but little use to players and not necessary for dungeon masters either。 A huge amount of monsters of all types for you to throw at your players in D&D 5e。 Very good book for DM's, but little use to players and not necessary for dungeon masters either。 。。。more

Great inspiration for any GM and honestly the only book you need from 5e。The layout gives the Pathfinder Bestiary a run for its money and lets it bite the dust。The art does leave a bit to be desired though as it has a very photo like quality to it instead of something I want to insert into my Roll20 and show to my players。 Would have liked some more action poses and dangerous looking compositions。But the writing is great and the art gives you just enough to get you started to alter it into your Great inspiration for any GM and honestly the only book you need from 5e。The layout gives the Pathfinder Bestiary a run for its money and lets it bite the dust。The art does leave a bit to be desired though as it has a very photo like quality to it instead of something I want to insert into my Roll20 and show to my players。 Would have liked some more action poses and dangerous looking compositions。But the writing is great and the art gives you just enough to get you started to alter it into your own twisted creation。Highly recommended! 。。。more

Adding this because it was the only book I was able to pick up and read for the first few months of 2021。 I have now read this cover to cover, and there's a lot of fun stuff in it, though I'd love to see more ideas for legendary and lair actions。 I also did cringe my way reading through descriptions of a number of race-based monsters - like orcs and drow - that felt pretty essentialist/racist。 Adding this because it was the only book I was able to pick up and read for the first few months of 2021。 I have now read this cover to cover, and there's a lot of fun stuff in it, though I'd love to see more ideas for legendary and lair actions。 I also did cringe my way reading through descriptions of a number of race-based monsters - like orcs and drow - that felt pretty essentialist/racist。 。。。more
